Go early, go weekdays. Popular orchards get mobbed on fall weekends: arriving before 11am (or going Friday) means shorter lines for hayrides and cider donuts.
Check before you drive. Crops sell out and fields close mid-day when picked over. Nearly every farm posts daily picking conditions on its website or social media. Check the morning of your trip.
Bring cash and sunscreen. Some farms are card-only, others cash-preferred. Wear closed-toe shoes you don't mind getting muddy.
